java applets dead slow to load

What version does it say you're running when if finally loads?

If it's saying 1.4.2 GCJ, that's a really old version and very slow.
I'd upgrade to 1.6 (the Sun version).

After updating, you should run update-java-alternatives to ensure that
it's active.
