Generally speaking I make partition 1 primary for Windows (if Windows is
needed).  Most Windows versions don't like being anywhere else.  You can
use something like grub to fool Windows, but it's just easier to make it
the first primary partition.

After that, I usually have a primary Linux root partition and a primary
Linux swap partition.  The rest is LVM (but could as easily be an extended
physical partition).  However, neither the root or swap partitions _need_
to be primary.
