setting ip addresses question

It was a good looking idea Earl, but no bisquit.

I have no idea whats wrong, but for some reason it absolutely refuses to 
accept and setup an ipv4 address by any means but dhcp.

Hummph.  Last I knew ifconfig eth0 up would bring up a full configured 
interface, but on ubuntu it takes an ifup eth0 to do it.  That took another 
half an hours worth of playing 10,000 monkeys.  Anyhway, I got it working 
finally.  Thanks.
