The option quiet affects the amount of (IMHO not really helpful)
messages that are displayed while the system is booting. [I'd guess that
turning this option off is comparable to debug mode]
However, these messages are usually hidden by the splash screen that is
shown during the boot process. If you remove the "splash" bit you should
be able to see the console messages. I must admit, however, that I don't
know why the screen remains blank...
