function keys dead in 6.06 LTS Live dvd installation, need them badly.

On a $19 keyboard I bought because of its size?  Most keyboards are about 1/2" 
too wide for the little shelf this one sits on.  So it doesn't have a bunch 
of those tits on a boar extra keys we all spend hours trying to figure out 
some way to make them useful to a linux box.  No 'multimedia' keys that I'm 
aware of, but I will indeed check that before I go through the pain of yet a 
3rd reinstall.  Adept blew away the 1st, updating the kernel and such, I saw 
it, killed adept, but the machine had already been rendered unbootable by 
then.
