Have a section under Section "Screen" with some reasonable resolutions:
Identifier      "Default Screen"
Device          "whatever"
Monitor         "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth    24

SubSection "Display"
  Depth           24
  Modes           "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

(Then restart X)
That way you at least remove the problem of the res being out of range for the 
monitor. If you can get in , then fire up K->System Settings->Display and 
muck about in there - worked for me.
