LCD monitor recommendations?

I only find the possible resolutions in xorg.conf.
I don´t see anything about refresh rates or anything else.
The weird thing is, it gets to the graphical log in screen and looks 
great...
then craps out when I log in.
Also, there is no documentation in this box (I bought it at Office Max, 
I was expecting something in there...)
How do I know what the ¨correct settings¨ are?
