Probably so.  I went back and "removed" everything I did and executed the 
above 'aptitude' line.  It installed version 7. and muttered about updating 
to version 8. .  If it goes this far why didn't it do 8 in the first place?  
Oh well, we will ignore it for the moment.

After a few agonizing hours I finally figured out the damn procedure to 
establish myself as a user.

PostgreSQL 7.x seems to be up and running.

Thanks for your help.

After a little shakedown cruise I'll see if it does any better on the join 
problem.  Also I have to learn a new variant on the SQL and "enhancements."
