How do I change screen resolution?

I cannot get a higher screen resolution in Kubuntu or Ubuntu than
1024x768. I know the video card and monitor support higher
resolutions because I run much higher using Windows 2K.

I checked the screen resolution in both Kubuntu and Ubuntu GUI but
1025x768 is all the higher it shows.
