Problem updating kernel

What happens when you boot the old kernel, but not in recovery mode?  Why 
won't it boot?  How far does it get?

What happens when you boot in recovery mode and then try to run startx, or 
xinit?

This is all smacks of a problem I had myself not long back, but I can't 
remember how I fixed it.  I'm hoping the answers to these questions will 
trigger a memory.
