Problem updating kernel

Im sorry I do not know much but I had to use recovery mode recently
for a different reason. In my case I could type my username
login username
(password)

and then th ecommand
startx
worked to get a mostly normal display. I then saved some data and
tried to repair some damage.
One of the things I had to do was check the    /etc/fstab   entries
and also do a file system check (fsck I think)

Maybe others can help more
