OS X file sharing

All sharing is enabled on my Macs, I can share between them just fine. Again,
I see them when I click on samba share, but once I open the icons there is
nothing there.
If I try to connect vis FTP or SSH, which also shows up under Remote
Places>Network Service, I get the following error "Unknown host
my-computer.local".
I do have zero configure on as well.
