switching keyboard layouts with keyboard?

Hi, how do I enable switching keyboard layouts using keyboard key 
combinations, e.g., Alt+Shift?

There seem to be options for that in System Settings > Regional & Language > 
Keyboard layouts > Xkb settings
but the options are so numerous and nothing seems to be working right, so I am 
lost...

I would guess that the option "Alt+Shift changes group" that has a command 
setxkbmap -option grp:alt_shift_toggle
is the right one, but it is not working. MAybe to get it working I have to set 
more options?

Using Kubuntu 6.10
