hibernating laptop

My laptop 'suspend to ram' facility does not work well: sometimes 
my laptop recovers, sometimes the display stays black, although the 
system has restarted, user being able to remotely connect through 
an ssh session.

So i have tried to install the 'hibernate' and the 'uswsusp' packages 
They do not conflict each other nor they ask any questions at the
installation stage.
Any advice about which package to chose?
How to enable one of them?
