Display Adjustment

*I have faced a problem while adjusting the display settings from 1280 X to
1024 X 768 on two machines. After adjusting the resolution to 1024 X 768
 when I restart the computer the display is 640 X and is not adjustable
upwards and this has made me format and reinstall Kubuntu 7.04 although all
the available updates were downloaded and installed.*
*Please advise if some solution for this problem is available.*
