Adding speech engine to KDE

I use KDE 3.5.x on Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn. I need to add a text-to-speech
engine. In Kcontrol I go to (translated) Area and Disability Settings
-> Speak Text -> Speaking (this is the second tab) -> Add. No matter
what language or synthesizer I choose, the OK button is grey and I
cannot add the engine. What must one do in this case?
