motherboard crash

I had the same thing happen recently to my Ubuntu Box.  When I put
the hard drive into the new Box, I reconfigured X and things ran
fine. 

The other thing I needed to do was work on the network connection as
I use static IP address on my network.  I found, with the new network
card, I was on eth1 and not eth0 any more.  I just redid eth1 as
static and everything is fine.

Oh, I had to rejoin the Windows workgroup too.  I would think Kubuntu
would do the same.
