I'm stumped on a boot/video problem

I'm running 7.04 on an older Gateway. Works fine. I'm very pleased. 
However...

In the event of a power outage or a power down, when I power back up, 
the bios screen shows, then "Kubuntu" with a green bar on the right side 
of the screen, then, instead of the login screen, I get a black screen.

If I then turn off the power, put in a Knoppix or Kubuntu 6.10 live CD, 
boot, power down and boot again from HD, all is well.

The monitor is an LCD and my xorg.conf is:
