Speeding up KDE -- More Help Needed

I hear ya. Talked a couple of friends into trying Kub with varying mileage. 
User type ranges from "technoid quasi-nerd" to "can't paste a url from the 
browser".
When I look at my Mac user friends I see this can work but still Linux isn't 
there yet, not even Kubuntu. 
The day come however the "community" idea will face a hard challenge.
If nobody knows anymore what makes the distro tick - how is anyone supposed to 
help someone?
If that means I have to *buy* support from Canonical - why use Linux anyway? 
I could rather get a Mac then and don't need support.
(Not trying to evangelize, just see a friend who's been a Mac guy for 9 years 
now and never ever phoned me about computer issues or complained having a 
tough day because he had to fix some obnoxious problem.)

And resolve library dependencies on your own. I still do that on Slackware...
