Speeding up KDE -- More Help Needed

I am running xubuntu on my old lap top. I don't know it's stats but it was
so old that it needed the special graphics free not live second install disk
just to get it to install. If you can live without kde then xubuntu works
well and runs on my really old laptop and it is fast. This laptop had a hard
time with win 95. Maybe half the speed of my new amd-x2 system running kde.
