When you start up your computer you should get a list of operating
system (OS)- kernels - to boot into. Normally the boot loader - either
grub or lilo - will highlight the top choice, your normal, current, Linux.
At this point, using the up and down keys of your numeric pad, go down
to a 'generic' or recovery kernel.
When loaded this will bring you to a terminal prompt, a $ or # sign
followed by a flashing cursor. At this point type your user name and
press Enter.
At the next flashing cursor type in your password and press Enter.
Follow this by typing in 'startx" and press enter.
This hopefully should bring you to you desktop.
