Thought I keep ya'll posted here.
I discovered that ACPI is the culprit ---- in combination with a dying CPU.
Whether it's ACPI that killed the CPU or not isn't clear but it will only boot in "battery mode" now.
The 2.6 kernel is just too heavy a load (with or without ACPI) for the P3.
