When it varies from list to list to list, and one is subbed to over a 
screens height of lists, its very difficult to ask us to keep track of 
how the individual list does it.  Its much simpler to hit that a key so 
you know everyone will get a copy.  That means the poster you are 
replying to will get 2 copies, which as you say, is a drag for the other 
poster.  Here on this list for instance, using the reply to sender 
button, which should be a private reply, actually sets it to the list 
only.  And this is not IMO, correct and should be fixed at the list 
server.
