FWIW I had the almost similar issues on a Fujitsu lifebook E series. Kubuntu as well as Mandriva2007 give the same troubles.

As of this moment I'm installing Slackware 11.0 on it with a 2.4 kernel, suspecting it' s a kernel thingy.
Didn't get edgy to work on a 2.4 so i'll just give this a go.
The laptop doesn't overheat using an ol' Slackware live CD, hence my trying the 2.4 kernel.

I'll keep y'all posted if it works.
