Not hard. Tedious and time consuming.

"New north bridge detected!  Please feed me a CD!  Then I will reboot!"
"New south bridge detected!  Please feed me a CD! Then I will reboot!"
"New soundcard detected! Please feed me a CD! Then I will reboot!"
"New video card detected.  I will run at 640x480x16 until you feed me a CD! 
Then I will reboot!"

Ad nauseam.  Bleck.  Compared with Linux, where moving to a new computer 
typically involves reconfiguring X11 and then you're good to go (or leaving 
it alone if you keep the same video chip manufacturer and display resolution 
along the way), I don't find this aspect of Windows impressive at all.

This IS NOT a Windows rant, so let's please not get into a pissing contest 
here.  Like I said (and you said):
