This is where I have to ask -- why? What's wrong with asking this question? If 
we cannot ask certain questions and expect reasonable debate about them in a 
rational manner then things just ain't as open as they seem.

This is part of the problem really -- Too many distros and too many 
sub-distros within each. IMHO each release of Ubuntu is a new distro -- one 
that gets "left behind" in time.

Look, I don't want to get a reputation for constantly bitching about this 
thing. I wanted to have a frank and clear conversation about it but I see 
feathers get ruffled almost immediately. That tells me it's a sore-point and 
that's all the answer I need. 
Hopefully it's such a blatant problem that teams of very experienced, 
organized and cabable people (like the good people who *already* bring us 
Ubuntu) can see it and start to think along those lines.
