I have a mixed windows/samba/mac network here
I found the Unnoficial Ubuntu guide section on networking very
useful when I set it up.
I use USER not SHARE for access
If you DON'T use one machine either windows or linux/samba as a
wins server you need to use fixed IP addresses AND a hosts file
        in windows

Lastly I use firestarter or McCaffee(win32) firewall on all
        machines to controll access

If something doesn't go through I want , I use the firewall gui
to allow the service or connection from that IP address.

I have the smb workgroup AND the TCPIP network dommain the SAME
        name.

I have EVERYTHING on fixed ip addresses EVEN wireless machines
and the full host file on all machines.

The only things that DOESN'T work is win XP machines have
trouble printing to some printers as there is no Network driver
available of some of the printers.

Legacy windows machines are fine as I can install the printer as
a local, and then change it to network, not quite as crippled as
        XP.

Also I haven't gotten a WinXP HOME computer to be able to access
the linux/samba file servers IT CAN get to the gateway and
Legacy windows machines "out of the box". I haven't had time to
look at this yet in detail, as long as it accesses the internet
it's user( my daughter in law) is happy. This is an
authentication issue I think...It does access my printers but
can;t print on some due to the aforementioned lack of driver.
There are alternate drivers but the resolution suffers.

FWIW all printers on the net are shared via SMB due to the mixed
        nature.

Lastly NEVER use any kde or gnome smb gui OR swat if you edit
smb.conf manually or vice versa. None of the gui tools work well
with a manually edited config file,OR a file that has been
edited with a different tool. (I learned this the hard way.)
except for SWAT and that needs work to get running in Ubuntu (as
        does the cups we interface).

Best results getting things started to work was copy and paste
        from the "unnoficial Ubuntu guide"

If this helps I'll still pass up the offer about the toenails,

        Bryann
