I had problems in Feisty, but got it working in Dapper. Does dmesg
and /var/log/syslog say it has been recognised? Make sure /dev/ttyS0
(or in your case ttyS1) really is the correct device.
The files I used are at
http://kubuntu.org/~jriddell/vodafone-3g-datacard/
wvdial.conf in /etc or course and wvdial in /etc/ppp/peers/
dialed with
wvdial option 3gonly internet 384k
My one didn't come with a pin set as far as I've seen, and I havn't
needed it.
I also needed to set resolv.conf manually.
