There are many posts on the list about problems with the backends. Almost
all of them come about because the kernel developers and Jorge Schilling
(cdrecord author) can't agree on the correct way to allow a program to have
access to the CD burner. The latest ones have been because udev refuses to
recognize the scsi-generic device as related to the burner. In all those
cases though, cdrecord has the same problem whether you use k3b or not.

When was the last time you created a DVD with growisofs and Hebrew file
names? The problem is that growisofs either doesn't have the ability to
use them, or wasn't passed the right parameter. If you know what it needs,
I'm sure we can get k3b to pass it.
