The Ubuntu Community documentation is generally a good place to look for
information on installing third party software of any kind.  


Also, while small comfort right now you can look forward to a more
pleasant experience with Ubuntu 7.04 -- the kernel team will be
supplying the VMWare tools and kernel modules as part of the
distribution, at least by their plan.
