How to modify "System places" menu

I was watching this thread with interest.
I just added some links to that folder, but they still do not appear in 
the menu from the taskbar.
Do I need to edit some text file? (I opened the directory in konq as 
sudo and then
simply created the links via rt-click, gui method.)
