USB devices - howdoi?

Hi,
This is the opposite of a howto - it's a howdi :)
It's all about USB stuff.

1.
This might sound extremely daft, but how would I go about making a sound play
when I plug in a USB device and another when I unplug it?

2.
How do I get particular USB hard drives to *always* use the same mount point?
When I plug in my Maxtor (for example) I always want it to be
in /media/maxtor.
At the moment it's kinda done by 'magic'. I
see /media/sda1, /media/sdb1, /media/sdc1 and the mount point seems to cycle
upwards everytime I connect a new device.

3.
Have you noticed?
This happens quite often, I'll describe the steps:
a. plugin USB hdd. An icon appears on desktop name "120G Media"
b. I right-click it and choose "Mount"
c. It mounts fine.
d. I work with it. Later I unmount it.
e. I unplug and plug it in again - maybe I took drive away for a time.
f. The icon appears
g. I right click on it but there is no "Mount" option. It's just not there.
h. I must open a console and sudo mount it.
Sometimes what happens at point d and e is that something I do crashes the usb
system and I am forced to umount as root from the console. Then when I try to
remount from the icon, it's the same as g.

That's the lot.
/d
