Q: howto for updating NVIDIA driver

How did you drop down to a console session? 
Did you switch by doing ctrl-alt-f1?

If you log out to kdm, there should be an option to drop down to
console.  You could also at the console, do /etc/init.d/kdm stop.
This will stop kdm.
