how to make a *.deb package from source

Larry,

Please start a new thread when you have a new question instead of hijacking an 
existing thread.  It makes reading easier for those of us who use kmail or 
thunderbird or gmail or other threaded mail readers.

That said, use the following steps.

./configure
make
checkinstall -D
