Linux freezes randomly

Something similar happened to me when fixing a friends machine.  A
similar thing kept on happening, and it turned out the hard drive was
totally gone.  It worked perfectly in most sectors, but a few were
beyond repair.  They were so far gone that it just treated it like a
read skip and tried again.

and again.

you get the idea.  I agree with Donn, however.  First check your
cables - ALL of them - and then think about giving your drive a proper
funeral (hint: unless it's a microdrive, you can't put en la WC like
that dead fish) : )
