You don't _boot_ into gnome.  You boot into Ubuntu.  Then you _login_ to
Gnome or KDE.

You don't need to reboot - it will not be in the grub menu.

Ack!!!!  Don't remove it (if you even can).  You _absolutely_ need grub (or
another boot manager) or you won't be able to start Linux at all.  If you
only have one operating system, though, you can skip the grub menu (I
_think_ if there's only one menu option, it automatically starts it without
the menu display, but I can't confirm that).
