Problems with video output

You can run

glxinfo | grep direct

to see if you have opengl hardware support enabled (you may need to install 
the package mesa-utils in order to perform glxinfo)
If you get the output 

direct rendering: No

then your problem is that hardware 3D support isn't enabled. Can you post the 
contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log? It may contain some usefull information 
about your problem.
