LCD Monitor recommendations

OK...here's a blow-by-blow.

1. Installed 2.6.28.whatever
2. Clicked K
3. Clicked log out
4. Clicked restart
5. Screen went wonky, with horizontal bars of (I think) characters streaming
all up and down the screen
6. Gateway splash screen displayed properly
7. Grub dialog displayed properly
8. More light show as when we logged out
9. I left it for lunch. When I came back in a few minutes, Kubuntu logon
screen was displayed properly. I logged in.
10. Screen went black. I could tell from the sounds that I had entered my
account, but nothing shows on screen
11. The monitor complains that the signal is out of range. From the message
that appears randomly, the problem is that vertical refresh is 87.?? and
this monitor's vertrefresh is 50-85
12. Alt-Ctrl-F1 takes me to the light show. Alt-F7 takes me back to Signal
is out of range.

I pulled the plug, shutting down uncleanly, and restarted with a
Knoppix 3.9CD. I mounted /dev/hda1 and grabbed the pertinent parts of
xorg.conf:
