I had the same problem as the OP below. I just tried the solution
offered above and it is working for me. I had also noted an issue
with power saving being enabled/disabled. Because my monitor takes so
long to warm up and look good I always disable powersaving. As noted
by others, the screensaver would never kick on unless power saving was
enabled.
