It wasn't a problem.  I did this on an HP Pavilion 6000.  Delete Vista
partition, create small partition with an Ubuntu LiveCD, boot from the HP
recovery partition to recreate Vista (then delete, again, all the garbage
that HP adds - the Microsoft garbage is bad enough, but to have almost a
gigabyte taken up with HP games [that cost $ to play] is infuriating). 
Then install Kubuntu into the free space.

I don't think so - at least not with those portions it knows it doesn't own.
