What you are looking for is seom as beryl-vidcap plugin:

# Add these sources:

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb feisty eyecandy
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb feisty eyecandy

# Import the corresponding gpg key:

wget -q http://download.tuxfamily.org/3v1deb/Release.gpg/Release.gpg \
-O- | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

# Install bery-vidcap:

sudo apt-get install beryl-plugins-vidcap

# Install mencoder:

sudo apt-get insall mencoder

# Configuring the vidcap plugin inside Beryl:

go to beryl preferences / extras
check capture plugin

go to the Options deck
Ensure the Output is:
file:///tmp/beryl-capture.seom

go to the Post-Processing deck
Ensure the Command is:
seom-filter /tmp/beryl-capture.seom | mencoder - -ovc xvid -xvidencopts
bitrate=1200 -o $HOME/Desktop/BerylVideo.avi

Then you are done.

To start/stop a video capture do:
<SUPER>+<F8>
