Although maintaining a separate partition for /home does make a clean
reinstall of the O/S that much less painless, he should be backing up
all of his personal data, anyway. Living on a separate partition won't
prevent data loss from operator error or drive failure. 

The latest version of "Keep" for Feisty works pretty well and will
happily put the backup stores on a separate physical drive.
