can´t choose Ubuntu in grub menu

When I reboot my dual-boot machine,
it gets to the grub menu, and I can see Ubuntu and Windows (windows
being the default for
no good reason whatever), but I can´t ¨choose¨ ubuntu, because there is
no response
to the use of the arrow keys.
Once the machine has booted (into the dreaded windows os), the keyboard
functions properly.
I don´t know if this has something to do with the hardware/keyboard or
what,
but I would like to be able to boot Ubuntu on that machine.
Any ideas?
As always, any and all assistance appreciated.
