I did this in 2001 myself.  For the rare occasions when I really need color, I 
can get stuff printed by online print-your-own-photo places, even if it isn't 
a photograph.  I buy one thing of toner about every other year.  Nothing ever 
dries up.  It holds a lot of paper, the paper doesn't get dusty if I go a few 
days without printing anything.

I love my laser, and I can live with monochrome in exchange for the 
hassle-free service.  So far it's working out that it's cheaper to buy a new, 
faster, better printer when the drum unit in the first one needs replacing.  
The drums *are* expensive, but for another $100 I can get a printer with 
twice the PPM and double the resolution in 3-4 years, and I can usually sell 
the old printer for close to $100, so it's about even.
