The patented feature is the TrueType "bytecode interpreter" rather than
ClearType rendering. Sub-pixel decimation should be fine.

Does the problem go away if you turn of anti-aliasing for true-type
fonts entirely in the KDE control panel (and then log out, then back
in?)
If not then tell us:
* does this happen on a CRT or only on an LCD?
* what is the native resolution is the LCD panel you are using?
* the output of the command 'xdpyinfo | grep dimens'
