NFS questions

First, how can I make the initial connection from my laptop (client) to my main 
box (server) faster? (it takes more than a minute to establish a connection but 
thereafter navigating and file transfers are quick).

Here are the relevant file entries:
client's /etc/fstab:
192.168.0.#:/home/nigel /mnt/ Home nfs noauto,rw,user,hard,intr 0 0

server's /etc/exports:
/home/nigel  192.168.0.#(sync,rw,root_squash)
