on-screen display program/command?

Under Mandrake, which I used for many years, I used to occasionally
use a command-line program that could place user-defined text on the
KDE screen. I can't recall what it was called, and now I find myself
needing to do the same thing under Kubuntu.

Can anyone suggest programs that are part of the Kubuntu distro that
would achieve this purpose?

I recall that the program I used to use allowed one to control all the
things that one would expect: size, location, how long it displayed
for, etc.
