Adding Proprietary stuff from Adept

Hi! I am new to Kubuntu but not linux (mandrake & redhat for 3 yrs.), 
and I can't seem to get proprietary stuff (opera, extra xine codecs, 
etc.) to work from adept without installing a bunch of stuff for ubuntu 
(synaptic, the 'software properties' thing, etc.). It see it under adept 
when I check off the 'unsupported' and 'proprietary' boxes, but the 
selection is gray and can't be checked. What do I do? Thanks!
