packages kept back, adept notifier icon won't go away

You need to upgrade those manually. Bring up adept, and uncheck the "not 
installed" and "installed" checkboxes, leaving only the "upgradeable" 
checkbox checked. Then you can select these and tell adept to upgrade 
them. That's how I solved this issue.
