ls hangs in root filesystem

A couple of things to try:

1. Have a poke around in the log files on the server machine, they're usually 
in /var/log/samba, maybe theres a clue in one of them.

2. Can you see the files on the server using Konqueror on the desktop machine 
by typing e.g. "smb://Hagrid/richard" in the address bar? (if so, the 
server's OK the problem must be at the desktop end)
